Last night in Pinesdale, Joseph Lyman Jessop the fourth and his wife Donia, who both grew up in Short Creek, shared their story of how they were able to extricate themselves
from the FLDS or Short Creek group.
Their story is fascinating, heart breaking, and a liberating one that took
place in the sinister shadow and manipulating hands of Warren Jeffs. Their storied romance became entangled in a
whirlwind of doctrinal brainwashing, control, financial deceit, and sexual
cover up. Listening to their experience,
you can’t help but wonder how in the world two seemingly well-functioning
adults not only got caught up in that mess but also became willing participants.
The answer is actually quite simple…sinking in quick sand
does not happen instantly. Warning
signs, if left unheeded, will eventually trap you. In hindsight, the Jessops’ religious warning
signs were certainly visible but they were disguised in the robes of priesthood
power which allowed them to naively believe only the prophet held the keys to their salvation.
Joe and Donia spoke of a terrifying “Night of Judgement” in 2011 when the whole community of Short
Creek was dragged before the judgement bar of Warren Jeffs and his brother Lyle. Individual family members were pulled in and
either found “Worthy” or “Wanting” based on questions of sexual
purity and loyalty to the priesthood.
The judgments ripped families apart as the Worthy ones were asked to move to Texas to build a temple and the Wanting ones were either left behind or exiled. Children were taken
from their mothers, wives were reassigned, and guilt was laid heavily on each individual for not being “sweet enough”. The effects were devastating.
The scene they described is eerily similar to what became
known as the Night of the Long Knives
in 1934 where the new leader of Germany, Adolf Hitler, had political opponents jailed or assassinated in order to gain complete control of the government. Much like Nazi Germany, the population of
Short Creek was turned inside out as neighbors and family members were asked to
spy on each other. No one could be
trusted and no one was safe from the longs arms of Warren Jeffs. The community that was once built on charity
and loving your neighbor could no longer even shake hands with their own spouse for more than two seconds or
it was considered adultery. The only
person that could be trusted was the prophet to whom they were required to pray
for on an hourly basis. Mothers were
required to be up and going about their family duties by four AM or they could be turned in by their children and neighbors. Fathers were stripped of their role in the home and were only allowed to function as representatives of the prophet
in the home by reading required sermons from the prophet nightly to their
children. “Loyalty to the Priesthood is Life” became the literal banner and pledge that each child, women, man, household, and business operated under. I know, it
sounds crazy! How could this happen to
good people right here in America?
Again, the answer is simple if you travel back up the road and read the warning signs.
The FLDS hellish practices did not begin in 2011 on the Night of
Judgement with an immediate purge to separate the Worthy from the Wanting. They started years before with small things
that were seemingly insignificant and harmless.
The slippery slope began with teaching children that the only way to
gain salvation was by the doctrine of introduction through the “Lord’s prophet”. The slip was furthered by something as
innocent as a policy of not allowing dogs in the home because of their uncleanliness.
This policy eventually turned into a test of ones commitment to the priesthood
authority. The slip continued by asking
for financial contributions to the priesthood as a sign of worthiness. Ultimately, the slip became a slide as the
church authorities began dictating the terms of intimacy between husband and wife. Finally, the slide was completed as total
control was rested from the individual and held by one man. All of this was done by men holding the alleged
power and authority of the priesthood while at the same time covering up their own
sexual misdeeds and abuses.
The Jessops’ description of the dangerous path of power, authority,
scandal, sexual molestation, and cover up in which Warren Jeffs led his group is
a frightening foreshadowing and warning of what lays ahead for the AUB. Furthermore,
it stands as a caution to those who would like to start their own “new group.” Backing
up the car and simply switching drivers will not somehow magically repair the road. The bridge is still out. Joe and Donia escaped
their religious nightmare not because they started a new group but because they
finally began to recognize the warning signs and decided to no longer
participate in their own demise. They
found their place of refuge and salvation not in the “infallible” hands of an
alleged prophet but instead in the bloodied and scarred hands of Jesus Christ.

Sounds like Joe has teamed up with another Joe to paint an awful scary picture of the AUB. Boo! sSure is scary when people try to better themselves like the council is asking us to do. Get real, this is getting ridiculous! The council is not the boogy man Joe makes it out to be. yes, they are men with weaknesses but together with the head of the priesthood they represent the will of the Lord and will keep us safe if you we have enough obedience and faith to follow.
Welcome to shortcreek nut job!
Dear sweet anonymous your claim of 2 Joe's couldn't be further from the truth. But your statement above sounds just like the (doctrine) of the FLDS according to what JLJ4 said last night. So please write this down in your journal... the aub is headed down the same road as shortcreek and you right along with them. I feel for you. As I sat and listened to these folks talk last night I thought how is it that a reasonable person could follow such folly, I was left to conclude reasonable people don't, deluded people do. I happen to know alot of good people who are reasonable and deluded and it's surprising to see just how many choose to believe a lie. It's actually quite sad just so sad.
Anonymous. Your mind-blowing concept is so much like short Creek." Together with the head of the priesthood they represent the will of the Lord and Will Keep Us safe if you have enough obedience and Faith to follow."
You're saying that Lynn Thompson and the Council represent the will of the Lord and will keep you safe. Safe from what. Are you depending on them to save you. Does your salvation lie in their hands. You make it clear what your gospel is. As for me I'll take the teachings of the prophet and savior and they may not keep me safe in this life but they will lead me to Salvation if I will live by correct principal.
Hoops on the bad punctuation there should have been a lot of ????? & !!!!!
Having been to the meeting where Joseph and Donia spoke about how they came out of short Creek and out from underneath the tyranny of that leadership. I found their story very uplifting and refreshing to see human beings triumph over oppression. And yes the warning signs are there. By our very nature. We should not assume that we could never fall into the same traps. Book of Mormon warnes us continually of these pitfalls and many others. Assuming we are above such things is a sure sign of pride. Alma 38 11 See that ye are not lifted up unto pride; yea, see that ye do not boast in your own wisdom, nor of your much strength.
12 Use boldness, but not overbearance; and also see that ye bridle all your passions, that ye may be filled with love; see that ye refrain from idleness.
13 Do not pray as the Zoramites do, for ye have seen that they pray to be heard of men, and to be praised for their wisdom.
14 Do not say: O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren; but rather say: O Lord, forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy—yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times.
15 And may the Lord bless your soul, and receive you at the last day into his kingdom, to sit down in peace.....
It's truly a miracle they escaped. It was amazing the love they still portray for their community and the testimony they shared of their Savior. I would hate to be "Up Short Creek Without A Paddle"
Anon 7.22pm - "will keep us safe if you we have enough obedience and faith to follow."
Warren Jeffs - "Perfect faith creates perfect obedience."
Just keep on "keeping sweet" and all will be well. (Irony intended.)

Men who obtain and hold the Melchizedek Priesthood correctly must be united as equals or they are not the Lord's servants. “That you may be equal in the bonds of heavenly things, yea, and earthly things also, for the obtaining of heavenly things. For if ye are not equal in earthly things ye cannot be equal in obtaining heavenly things;” (D&C 78:5-6)
All who hold the Priesthood correctly are to esteem their brother as themselves. (D&C 38:24-25) Thus all who hold the Melchizedek Priesthood correctly are together trustees to all the authority and keys given to this Priesthood in this dispensation.
As the Lord has said, “the priesthood is the master and the servants are the offices therein”. If a man is called to hold even what is considered the highest office of the Priesthood, his calling is that of a servant of the Priesthood body. All offices are ALWAYS subservient to the Priesthood as a united body. The body as a whole can always meet and take any office away from any member if the body is inspired unitedly to do so.
On the other hand, because others in the Priesthood can fail, every man who holds the Priesthood must be ready to follow revelation from the Lord independent of any other brother, or even of all his brothers. “Therefore, let every man stand or fall, by himself, and not for another; or not trusting another.” JST Mark 9:44 The scripture in context shows that every man in the Priesthood is responsible to stand on his own and not automatically trust a brother (a hand), a leader (a foot) or a prophet (an eye).
From the Mosiah Lyman Hancock Journal: “Someone got up and spoke in tongues; and Betty Tubbs spoke, saying that she well realized that the time had come for all to put their trust in God and not on man, `and for every tub to sit on it's own bottom', then she sat down! “ This is a funny quote, but it should help you remember that all men can fail you, and you must never give any man in the flesh unquestionable allegiance.
